Minnesota Watercraft Rental Requirements

New state rules now require renters who want to drive a rental boat in Minnesota to complete a short rental course unless they already have a valid watercraft operator's permit. However, if you book a captained boat ride, this requirement does not apply.

How to Get Certified

MN residents: Either complete the Minnesota watercraft rental course or obtain a watercraft operators permit

OPTION ONE: RENTERS LICENSE

  • Certification valid for 180 days

  • Certificate can be printed immediately or saved digitally on your phone

  • Required only for those without existing Minnesota watercraft operator permits

OPTION TWO: BOATING LICENSE

  • Permanent Minnesota watercraft operator's permit - no expiration

  • Required for anyone 21 years old or younger

  • Comprehensive boating safety education beyond basic rental requirements

Non MN Residents: If you're renting for fewer than 60 days and operating on Minnesota's waterways, you must meet any applicable requirements of your state or country of residency. Click Here for more information.
